Early life & background

From Kiryat Bialik, northern Israel, where he grew up with his parents Anat and Hagai and several siblings. 

Military service

Served as a combat soldier and tank operator in the IDF. On October 7, 2023, during the Hamas assault, he was critically wounded in his tank near Kibbutz Nahal Oz—his fellow crew member Itay Chen was killed

Hostage status

He was captured unconscious and taken into Gaza. His captivity has been confirmed through videos, photos, and testimonials from released hostages.

Health and treatment

Matan is reportedly in severe physical and psychological distress—suffering from untreated burns, fractures, infections, chronic asthma, and electric-shock torture during interrogations.

Appeals

In captivity, he has made emotional appeals—shown in released footage—urging the Israeli government and international figures (including an appeal to the U.S.) for a hostage deal to secure his release alive.
