Early life & background

From Kibbutz Be’eri near the Gaza border. Son of Tami and Roni Baruch, with brothers Guy, Niv, and Idan, and grandmother Geula Bachar—both of whom were murdered on October 7, 2023.

A 25-year-old aspiring electrical engineering student at Ben-Gurion University, who had recently traveled through South America.

Capture

On October 7, 2023, during the Hamas massacre of Kibbutz Be’eri, Sahar was taken hostage after bravely re-entering the burning family home to fetch his asthma-stricken brother’s inhaler.

Health and treatment

Held in Gaza by Hamas; he later appeared in a propagandistic video pleading: “I want to go home.” He died in early December, likely during an IDF rescue attempt on December 8. The military reported they cannot yet determine whether his death was caused by crossfire or captive execution.

Aftermath

On December 9, Kibbutz Be’eri publicly announced his death; his body remains in Gaza awaiting return.
